| Bio: | I am a republican socialist currently living in Burlington, Vermont. I have spent most of my life in Vermont, and I have a deep interest in politics, history, and many other subjects. This webpage is based around the principles of Vermont sovereignty and independence, along with news from developments around the world, political analysis and various perspectives from the left. This journal is committed to the principles of national liberation, radical feminism and ecology, revolutionary organisation and movement, Marxism, indigenous perspectives, Black nationalism, republicanism, and socialism. This journal covers a very wide range of subjects, but the primary issue is around Vermont independence and self-determination. That is, bringing into existance the Second Vermont Republic, the legitimate continuation of the First Vermont Republic, established between 1778-1791 by Ethan Allen and the First Westminster Convention, and laid out in the Constitution of the Vermont Republic, which states: "It is absolutely necessary, for the welfare and safety of the inhabitants of this State, that it should be, henceforth, a free and independent State; and that a just, permanent, and proper form of government, should exist in it, derived from, and founded on, the authority of the people only." The objective of the Vermont Sovereignty Movement is to re-establish Vermont's independence in the form of the Second Vermont Republic. This means we are committed to seeing Vermont as an indpendent, sovereign, and socialist nation, as the famous Irish hunger striker Bobby Sands said: "There can never be peace... until the foreign, agressive, and hegemonic prsence of [the United States] is removed, leaving the [Vermont] people as a unit to control their own affairs and determine their own destiny as a sovereign people, free in mind and body, seperate and distinct physically, culturally, and economically." Why republicanism and independence? Vermont must be independent becuase for a very long time it has been attached to an autocratic, imperialist, and anti-democratic regime, namely the United States. The United States has repeatedly committed war crimes. denied basic and fundamental human standards, such as the right to free association, respect for individual and national sovereignty, the illegality of the execution of minors, the abliity of citizens to self-determination and democratic participation, the equality of wages between women and men,and many, many, others, which it has violated repeatedly and as a matter of course since even beofore its conception. Sadly, Vermont and its citizens have regularly paid a heavy price for their association with the United States and its blatant illegality and immoral behavior. As an example, look at how much Vermonters are havving to pay for the current US occupation of Iraq, an occupation which Vermonters overwhelmingly disagree with (for the exact cost to Vermonters, see CostofWar.com.) Furthermore, the historical and political actions of the United States have been consistently opposed to Vermont's fundamental beliefs and values. Vermonters have traditionally had a great respect for our Mother Earth and all that we need from it in order to survive. Yet the United States has routinely supported or taken actions against these Vermont beliefs, perhaps the most shocking of which was its absolute rejction, in the face of world pressute, of the Kyoto Protocol, a step towards a more livable and sustianable world for everyone. Furthermore, Vermonters believe thar everyone, no matter what their race, age, gender, or sexual orientation, should be treated with fundamental respect and dignity. Vermont was the first and only state to outlaw slavery, it was also one of the first to legalize divorce, it was the first to allow unions between same-sex couples, it is a republic that overwhelmingly believes that a woman's body is her own, and only she should have the ability to make decisions about it, and Vermonters also overwhelmingly believe that those among us who are terminally ill or in incredible pain should have the ability to take medicines, such as marijuana, which can significantly reduce their suffering, and if they are in the last moments of their life and long for a peaceful death surrounded by the ones they love, a doctor will be able to help them do so. All of these beliefs and values stand in stark contrast to those of the United States, which has repeatedly been responsible for the genocide of its first peoples, for blatant agression against peoples in foriegn lands, and backs economic policies, such as slave-labor explotiation, privatization, and incredible debts, which cause misery and death around the world, and which deny those most vulnerable basic neccessities, such as education and even water. Is republicanism simply nationalism? No! republicanism could not be more opposed to nationalism and right-wing xenophobia. We are not saying that Veroont is above all other nations, or that only certain people can be "Vermonters," or that being a Vermonter is superior to all others. Just the opposite, we argue that Vermont is a republic among equals, no more, no less, and the being a "Vermonter" is not the domain of any race, religion, or other characteristic, but is made up of all peoples and all cultures who fundamentally value life, liberty, community, and equality. Vermont needs to be indepedent, not because it is superior, or to exclude others from it, but to have the responsiblity for its cicitzens to democratically decide their own future and run their collective life as they believe best serves their brothers and sisters around the world. Vermont must be independent, yet it cherishes all peoples and views, it is a place where people can come together, as on Town Meeting Day, and participate, free from subjugation or coercion, their communities and their future. It is also essential that we recognize the selflessnes and the dedication of all Vermonters, be they native born or not. Right now, many of our fellow Veromonters work in difficult jobs with little pay and little ability to become full memebers of the Vermont community, because they are hypocrtically branded "illegal" by the United States government, a government of rich white men who themselves are, by their own definition, "illegal" occupiers of the land of our native peoples. | |
